NEW STUDY: CyaninPlus found to reduce chronic pain in two human clinical pilot studies
May 26, 2016
Klamath Falls, OregonA recently published study by Jensen et al., in the Journal of Nutrition and Dietary Supplements, evaluated the effects of CyaninPlus on chronic pain. Results of the study suggest that CyaninPlus, a spirulina extract which concentrates a well-known, naturally occurring anti-inflammatory cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor phycocyanin (PC), is associated with the reduction of chronic pain, as well as an increased ability to perform daily activities.
Two pilot studies were conducted, where each study involved 12 healthy human subjects, ages 45-75, experiencing moderate chronic joint pain for a period of at least six months prior to enrolling in the study. In the first open-label study, participants consumed 1 g of CyaninPlus daily for a period of 4 weeks, with weekly evaluation for pain. Subjects in the second single-blind, placebo controlled study each consumed a placebo, 250 mg or 500 mg CyaninPlus daily dose for one week durations, separated by 7 day washout periods to evaluate the difference in experience of chronic pain. The overall conclusion of both studies indicates rapid effects of CyaninPlus consumption on the resolution of chronic pain. A dose-dependent relationship was noted with respect to an increased ability to perform daily activities.
“The rapid relief of chronic pain was seen after one week in both studies, both when subjects were resting and when being physically active. This may likely be associated with a complexity of anti-inflammatory mechanisms of action by CyaninPlus, as we have previously published (Jensen et al., 2015),” said lead author, Dr. Gitte Jensen, research director at NIS Labs where the studies were conducted.
“There is a growing interest in natural products that address inflammation and its associated pain as alternatives to over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications,” said Cassandra Drapeau, Product Manager from Desert Lake Technologies, the developer and manufacturer of CyaninPlus. “CyaninPlus is a natural extract that promotes anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving activity by inhibiting inflammatory pathways without the side effects of NSAIDS. CyaninPlus’s high concentration of PC has been linked to inhibition of COX-2 enzymatic activity and multiple documented health-supportive properties.”
